Are you covered for a tornado?

Are you covered for a tornado in Atlanta?

WHILE TORNADO’S ARE RELATIVELY RARE HERE IN ATLANTA WE HAVE HAD OUR FAIR SHARE OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, HAVEN’T WE?  THAT BRINGS UP THE QUESTION THEN,  WILL YOUR GEORGIA HOME INSURANCE PROTECT YOU IN CASE A TORNADO? WILL YOUR HOME AND BELONGINGS BE COVERED IF THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THEM? HEE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU ANSWER THAT QUESTION.
1: Check your homeowners policy
Yes, your home is usually protected against tornado and wind damage as long as you pay your homeowners insurance premiums. It wouldn’t be a bad idea though to double check your policy for the details. If you are not too sure just contact your GA insurance agent and they will answer that question for you.
2: Call your agent asap
So in the instance of  your home being hit by a tornado you need to contact your GA insurance company ASAP!  Why is this so urgent? Well depending on your coverage  and the state you live in your policy might actually put a time limit on filing tornado claims. This means that every moment counts.
Now remember, in the event of a tornado you probably will not be the only ones filing a claim. This is another reason to call them as soon as possible. These claims will be addressed by priority so the more damage to your home, then the sooner you will be helped. Make sure you give them all of your contact information.
3: OK… Prove It!
The key to this is being organized. Get a camera and a roll of film and document every part of the damage to your home and belongings. These photos will help you to get your claims both quicker and easier.
The reason we say you need to be organized is that you will need to show the value of the items that were destroyed. So do you have receipts and pictures of your belongings in a safety deposit box? If not, think of how frustrating it will be to try to prove it later on to the insurance company.
4: Don’t trust every huckster that rings your bell offering to help you with the damage
Remember that scammers and snake oil salesmen come out of the woodwork during times of natural disasters like this. So be leary of every one that comes knocking on your door wanting you to sign a contract. The offer to handle everything with the insurance company. All you have to do is sign on the dotted line.
What can you do?
  • Collect business cards
  • Ask for written estimates
  • Check proof of workers compensation insurance and general liability
  • Check references
  • Check for complaints with the BBB

How do you know you are REALLY covered with your property insurance?

How do I know that my personal things are protected with property insurance?

So you are loyally paying your Atlanta renters insurance and home insurance premiums religiously for years. Thankfully you haven’t needed to file a claim yet. But what if you needed to do so tomorrow… Would you be covered like you would hope to be? It all depends on what kind of riders you have added to your policy. Your Atlanta home insurance company offer “riders” that can be added to your policy to provide additional coverage.  For example here are two riders that you can select:
  • Actual Cash Value: The coverage will pay out on what the property  is worth at the time of the loss.  As you can imagine  this takes into consideration depreciation of the item based on  the Age of the item,  market value and the condition of the property at the time of loss or damage. In other words a $1,000 TV when new might only be worth $150 now after a few years of use.
  • Replacement Cost: This coverage will write you a check (minus the deductible) for what it would cost to REPLACE the item and buy you a new one if damaged or destroyed. It ignores depreciation completely.
In fact Clark Howard suggests that “replacement value” is the way to go on his radio show. Of course you will need to request this rider as it isn’t automatically part of your property insurance policy. In fact we would suggest adding this rider to anything you have that would be expensive to replace, like expensive jewelry for example. If you are unsure about what kind of homeowner insurance protection you have or would like to learn more about replacement value riders then all you have to do is click, call or come by and visit for awhile. Can YOUR iphone protect your belongings?

How can you use your iphone to protect your cherished valuables?

What would you do if a burglar broke into your home and stole your most valuable possessions? Unfortunately this happens every day in the world we live in. Sure you have GA home insurance to protect you,  but how do you prove what you had once it is stolen?
Clark Howard consumer guru from Atlanta tells us to  video tape them!
Here are a few tips on how to do this so you will have a recorded inventory of your valuables if you needed to present them to the insurance agency in case of a claim.
1.  Get your out your iphone or android phone camera. There are several ways to do this.
  • If you don’t have one borrow one from a friends and family. (This is the one that Clark Howard suggests because it is free!)
  • Years ago you would have to spend a lot of money on a video camera. Now smart phone cameras allow you to take awesome video!
  • Upload the video to your dropbox account.
  • Download the video directly to your computer.
2.  Walk through your home very slowly room by room panning your personal possessions. Take the time to get close ups of all the valuable things you have.
3.  As you walk talk about your items. Describe what they are in detail
4. Contact your home insurance company to ask them if there is anything else they would like to see in the case that you need to make a claim.
5. Make 2 DVD copies. One for you and one for the insurance agent in case they ask for it. Do not miss this important step. If you leave it on your computer and the computer is stolen you will be sorry.
6. Keep the DVD in a fireproof safe or better yet in a sfe deposit box so that it isn’t detroyed by fire or stolen.
We hope these tips will be helpful to you in cataloging your personal possessions whether you own a home or are just renting. Hopefully you will never need to make claims on your things, but that is what a little “insurance” is for!

Are you using a home inventory sheet yet?

Use a home inventory sheet to help you with your Atlanta home insurance claims

Nobody wants to lose their personal belongings to fire, theft or water damage. Yet, because “stuff happens” it is a real potential problem for all of us. So whether you have renters insurance or home insurance in Atlanta, pay very close attention to what we are about to share with you. So what can you do to protect yourself? This is where having a detailed inventory as well as proof of ownership at the time of a loss can really help to settle your  claims faster and easier. Now an accurate inventory will take some time to put together, but remember how much time and headaches it will save you later on.

What should your home inventory include?

  • Walk through every room of your home and make a detailed list of your personal belongings
  • Keep the receipts of the items in your possession (to prove ownership later)
  • Record detailed descriptions of your things
  • Take photos  or video of the items in your home.
I am not going to lie to you… it will take some time to do this,  just focus on how happy you will  be in case you have a claim later on!

Where should I keep my inventory sheet?

It doesn’t really make sense to keep this at home, does it? In case of fire or water damage it would be destroyed. So the experts suggest keeping it in a safe deposit box if you can. Whether you live in Marrietta, Austell, Smyrna, Vinings, Dunwoody, Roswell or anywhere in Cobb county for that matter a home inventory is essential in settling claims easily and quickly later on. Yet most people never bother to do so. Don’t fall into this trap too! In a future article we will share tips for doing a home inventory that will reward you when you need it. Bath Safety Tips

Many adults, children, and seniors take a bath every day. The moisture and water from a bath can create a dangerous situation for adults and children. You should consider several bath safety tips that can prevent injuries.
Use Mats, Rugs, and Grab Bars
Use mats and rugs on the floors in your bathroom. Place a non-slip mat inside of the actual tub. Place a mat or rug just outside of the tub and on slick surfaces. Consider installing grab bars both inside and outside of the tub. These items will all help to protect adults and children from slipping and falling while taking a bath.
Turn Off the Water Before Getting In
Something to be aware of is the fact that the water coming out of a faucet while filling a bathtub can change temperature at any time. It could become hot or cold even if you do not touch the knobs controlling the temperature. This is why it is important to turn off the water before getting into a bathtub. Check the temperature before you or your child get into the water. This will prevent scalding and burning.
Always Supervise Children
You should supervise children taking a bath at all times. The reality is that it takes only a couple of inches of water for a child to drown. Your children could even take risky actions while playing or exploring the tub during a bath. You want to watch your child every moment during bath time. Do not turn around or leave the room, even for a few seconds.
Keep the Floor Clean and Open
A final tip is to keep the floor clean and open. Even small things, like toys or a dropped washcloth, can become major hazards that lead to falls and injuries. You want to keep the floor of your bathroom clean, from the tub all the way to the door. Pick up anything that drops immediately. This will keep you safe while getting in and out of a bathtub.

Do you know what a clue report is?

Most people don't have a CLUE how a clue report can affect their home insurance in Atlanta.

Only 1 percent of people were very familiar with CLUE reports, according to a survey by insuranceQuotes.com, a Web site that helps consumers compare insurance quotes. Claims are stored for seven years in CLUE reports, which are reviewed by insurance companies that want to know more about the property and the people they're covering. The reports include such information as a person's name, birth date, the type of loss, the amount paid by the company and a description of the car or house. For instance, only 17 percent of the people surveyed were aware that insurance claims filed by a previous homeowner could affect what the current owner has to pay for coverage, according to the report from InsuranceQuotes.com. That's because CLUE reports keep track of the claims filed on a particular home. Contact your homeowners insurance agency BEFORE buying a home so they can pull the clue report for you.
